The EQF Process

The Copenhagen process in conjunction with the Bologna process have resulted in general consideration as to a European Qualification Framework. The initiative by the European Commission and the Parliament strives to establish & institutionalize a clear, secure and quick system for the recognition of qualifications: The key purposes of an EQF are to

• support lifelong learning and to make sure that the outcomes of learning are properly valued and used – which includes the validation of non-formal and informal learning;
• give guidance and counselling on education and training;
• promote key-competences for a competitive workforce.

The EQF is an instrument developed and implemented entirely on a voluntary basis. It does not entail an legal obligations. What it takes, though, is the commitment from stakeholders to achieve the political goals laid out at several occasions.
