Lifelong and Lifewide Learning

Lifelong Learning is “all learning activity undertaken throughout life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills, and competences within a personal, civic, social and/or employment-related perspective”.

While it is commonly recognized that learning is a permanent process, it is also important to note that there is another dimension: Lifewide Learning! Learning takes place in broad social and personal contexts and is not solely career-related.

Lifelong learning must put particular emphasis on the recognition of results of in- and non-formal training. This includes:

• Professional qualification must be recognizable and recognized;
• Recognition and quality assurance of qualification are crucial;
• A balance must be kept between subject-specific and cross-disciplinary training and generalized education.
